Tabs and Split Views

Open anything in tabs and split the center into as many groups as needed, right or down.

The center panel holds every content as a tab: SSH sessions, local terminals, AI sessions, files, scratch notes and projects. Any content that can be split shows two buttons in its tab bar, Split Right and Split Down. They open a new group beside it or under it, each with its own tabs. Splits nest, so a layout such as one session on the left and an editor over a terminal on the right takes two clicks.

Every split takes half of the room, an AI session included: splitting one opens a scratch note beside it. To write the next prompt of the session itself, it has its Extended Prompt (see Extended Prompt).

What a split opens depends on the content: an SSH session opens another session of the same host, a local terminal another terminal in the same folder, a file another view of the same document (edits show in both).

The menu of a tab (secondary click) offers Split Right, Split Down, Close and Send Feedback…. In the full app it also offers Detach (see Detach to New Windows). ⌘W closes the tab in front, from anywhere, a terminal included.

A tab whose program runs with more power than the user, such as a root shell, is tinted red and carries a red line.

What it does

  • Unlimited tabs per group and nested splits, horizontal and vertical.
  • Dividers between groups to resize them.
  • Per-content split behavior: same host, same folder or same document.
  • Tab menu with split, close and feedback; Detach in the full app.
  • ⌘W closes the tab in front.
  • Privileged (root) tabs are marked in red.

How it behaves

  • The group with the focus is the one the keyboard and the menu commands act on.
  • Closing the last tab of a group removes the group and its split.
  • Status bar and breadcrumb follow the active tab of the focused group.

Why it matters

  • Watch logs, edit config and run commands side by side, in one window.
