Built-in Code Editor
Edit local and remote files with syntax colors, find and replace, folding and save as root.
Text files open in the center panel, from a host or from this Mac (Open File, ⌘O). The editor has line numbers, the current line highlighted, folding, and syntax colors chosen by file name: JSON, YAML, .env, shell, nginx, config, JavaScript, TypeScript, Dart, Python, SQL, Markdown, XML and more. It uses the font of the terminals.
Find and replace (⌘F) supports case and regular expressions; ⌘L goes to a line. ⌘S saves with the original line endings (LF or CRLF) and encoding. The tab shows a dot while there are unsaved changes, and closing then asks whether to save, discard or keep it open. When the file changed on the server since it was opened, saving asks before overwriting.
When the user of the host may not write the file, saving offers to write it as root. The text goes to a temporary file first, and sudo gets only the password, through its input. Format JSON indents a JSON file, or says at which line and column it is invalid.
The status bar gives the line and column, the number of lines, the language, the encoding and the line endings. The editor splits into a second view of the same document.
What it does
- Syntax highlighting for 15+ languages, folding, line numbers.
- Find and replace with case and regex; go to line.
- Save keeps line endings and encoding; save as root with sudo.
- Conflict check when the file changed on the server.
- Format JSON; split views of one document.
How it behaves
- A file that is not text (a zero byte early on) is not shown.
Why it matters
- Fix a config on the server in seconds, without vim gymnastics.
